At Comme des Pirates, we understand the importance of maintaining the impeccable condition of your precious wooden toys . To ensure your toys last for years, we have developed an easy maintenance guide to help you keep them clean and well maintained.
Although not exhaustive, this guide is intended to be pragmatic, easy to remember and apply, focusing on the key elements to do and avoid.
Before we get started, did you know that wood has antibacterial properties ? It inhibits the growth and kills unwanted bacteria. Moisture is naturally drawn into the material, rather than on the surface, which stops them from multiplying! However, toys still need a good cleaning because they’re on the floor and in little ones’ mouths.
Since wood is more porous than plastic toys, cleaning methods are different.
Things to avoid with wooden toys
- Do not put them in the dishwasher , as the wood absorbs too much water and can become damaged, which can be dangerous for children.
- Do not soak in water . This is a very important measure to avoid, as it may damage the wood.
- Do not give your child a broken wooden toy . Be sure to inspect toys regularly for signs of wear or deterioration. Immediately discard any broken or damaged toys for safety reasons.
How to clean a wooden toy
- Read the instructions : Before cleaning a toy, check the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, instruction sheet, or washing labels. They may contain specific care instructions or recommend certain cleaning methods.
- Use natural cleaning products - rinse well with a sponge or cloth. Recommended cleaning products: Castile soap, white or apple cider vinegar diluted in water.
- Use a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap or non-toxic cleaning solution. Gently wipe the surface of the toy.
- Air dry - we highly recommend air drying the toy and keeping it out of direct sunlight as this may cause the colours to fade.
- For stubborn dirt , mix baking soda and water to make a paste. Apply it to the affected area and rub with a damp cloth.
- Machine washable toys (fabric parts): We recommend cleaning the surface only with a mild detergent and rinsing well with a damp cloth. Do not tumble dry.
If toys are used in nurseries, child care services (daycares, CPEs, family child care services) or educational environments, be sure to follow the organization's health guidelines. Always make sure not to soak them in water.
When should wooden toys be cleaned?

- When your child is sick or has recently been sick .
- If there are any traces of dirt and stains .
By following these few cleaning and maintenance tips, you can keep your wooden toys in good condition, which will extend their life and ensure many years of fun and imaginative play for your children. Happy playing!
